RideTandem enables £100 million in wages for passengers

Where it all began

In 2019, RideTandem began with a simple but powerful mission: to help more people access work.

In large parts of the country, people can’t get to work without owning a car. With 20% of bus routes cut over the last 10 years, the situation is getting worse, not better. Alex Shapland-Howes, our CEO, met a group of unemployed dads just outside Manchester who told him the biggest barrier to work was transport. This was the inspiration for creating an affordable, reliable shuttle bus service. Born from a chance meeting and a deep commitment to social impact, we set out to solve a pressing challenge - how to connect people without cars or reliable public transport to the jobs they need.

That story is still true for most of RideTandem’s passengers today; the majority of whom would not be able to access work without our shuttle services, or would have to sacrifice most of their wages just to cover the cost of travel. Rattanachai, a RideTandem passenger working in Rushden, said: "Without RideTandem’s service, I’d be out of a job. My only options were to walk two hours or to pay for a whole taxi myself".

2025 and beyond

Fast-forward to 2025, and we’re proud to share a major milestone: RideTandem has helped passengers access over £100 million in wages.

As the only B Corp-certified provider of employee transport services, RideTandem meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance. This milestone is a huge achievement, and we’re really proud to have helped our passengers reach valuable opportunities through our services.

"We set RideTandem up because we met a group of dads who couldn't get a job because they physically couldn't get there. This £100m milestone is a great chance to reflect on how far we've come and how big the opportunity is to reach £1bn and beyond" - Alex Shapland-Howes, CEO.

How did we make it happen?

The journey to this point has been made possible by the people who use our services every day. By making over 2,000,000 passenger journeys across the UK and Germany, we’ve helped connect communities to jobs that would otherwise be out of reach.

Whether it’s rural villages without buses, industrial parks unreachable by train, or early morning shifts before the first service runs, we’ve worked with employers and local transport partners to bridge the transport gap.

Why is it important?

For many, lack of transport isn’t just an inconvenience - it’s a barrier to employment, independence, and stability. RideTandem’s work isn’t just about moving people from A to B. It’s about unlocking opportunity, supporting economic mobility, and empowering people to earn a living.

Behind every journey is a story: someone starting a new job, returning to work after time away, or simply being able to keep a job that supports their family. The social impact is real, and it matters.

What’s next?

We’re really proud of this milestone, but it’s just the beginning. Millions still face transport barriers that limit their potential. We remain committed to working with more communities and employers to build better, fairer access to work.

There’s still so much to do, and we’re just getting started.
